Relativity and Modern Astrophysics

Manual: General · Subject: Physics

Applies special relativity to high-energy astrophysical flows, radiation, and observation of relativistic sources.

Relativistic Phenomena in the Universe

Doppler and Beaming

For a source moving toward an observer, relativistic Doppler shifting alters observed frequency and intensity. Relativistic beaming concentrates emission into a narrow forward cone of angular scale roughly θ∼1/γ\theta \sim 1/\gamma.

Relativistic Jets

Jets in active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray bursts are often modeled with bulk Lorentz factors γ≫1\gamma \gg 1. Observed superluminal motion can arise from projection effects and light-travel-time delays, not from actual faster-than-light transport.

Synchrotron Radiation

Ultra-relativistic charged particles spiraling in magnetic fields emit synchrotron radiation. The radiation is strongly anisotropic in the lab frame due to relativistic aberration and time compression.

Observational Payoff

Many modern astrophysical inferences about jet power, source size, and variability timescale rely directly on relativistic kinematics.

What is a standard explanation for apparent superluminal motion in jets?

What approximate beaming angle is associated with a highly relativistic source?

Interpreting Astrophysical Data

  1. 1

Step 1: Infer the source frame from redshift and viewing geometry.

  2. 2

Step 2: Estimate the bulk Lorentz factor from variability or proper motion.

  3. 3

Step 3: Correct for Doppler boosting and beaming.

  4. 4

Step 4: Translate observed fluxes into intrinsic energetics.
