Neutrino Cosmology and Relativistic Species

Manual: General · Subject: Cosmology

Explore how neutrino masses, hierarchies, and extra light relics affect expansion history and structure formation.

Neutrinos as cosmological particles

From radiation to matter-like behavior

Standard neutrinos were once relativistic and contribute to the radiation density, but massive neutrinos later become nonrelativistic and affect both the expansion rate and the growth of structure. Their large thermal velocities suppress clustering below a free-streaming scale.

🔑

Two main effects

Massive neutrinos modify the background expansion and suppress small-scale matter clustering through free-streaming.

Effective relativistic species

Interpreting NeffN_{\rm eff}

The parameter NeffN_{\rm eff} captures the energy density in relativistic species beyond photons. It is sensitive to neutrino decoupling physics, extra light particles, and some early-universe reheating scenarios.

Mass hierarchies and absolute mass scale

Cosmological mass sensitivity

Cosmology is most sensitive to the sum of masses ∑mν\sum m_\nu, rather than the individual mass eigenstates. This makes it complementary to oscillation experiments, which measure mass splittings but not the absolute mass scale.

Beyond standard neutrinos

New light relics and sterile states

Cosmology constrains sterile neutrinos, majorons, axion-like particles, and other light relics through their effects on NeffN_{\rm eff}, free-streaming, and structure formation. These constraints often depend on production mechanism and thermal history.

Which observable is especially sensitive to sub-eV neutrino masses through lensing and clustering suppression?

What quantity do oscillation experiments measure that cosmology does not directly determine?
