Neural Signals, Measurement Modalities, and the Data Generation Problem

Manual: General · Subject: Computer-Brain AI

Study how different measurement technologies shape what can be inferred from the brain and what scientific questions are feasible.

Measurement Modalities

Signals Used in Computer-Brain AI

EEG/MEG

  • Noninvasive
  • High temporal resolution
  • Low spatial resolution and strong mixing

ECoG

  • Moderately invasive
  • Better spatial specificity than EEG
  • Suitable for speech and motor decoding
⚠️

Measurement Is Not Neutral

Every sensor is an inductive bias. Your conclusions are constrained by sampling rate, spatial coverage, noise sources, and the physiological processes actually observed.

Signals, Noise, and Nonstationarity

Key Challenges

Neural recordings are often contaminated by movement artifacts, electrical interference, tissue response, electrode drift, state changes, fatigue, and day-to-day variability. If xtx_t is the recorded signal and yty_t the latent target, a simple model p(yt∣xt)p(y_t\mid x_t) is usually insufficient because the data-generating process changes with context ctc_t, subject state sts_t, and device condition dtd_t.

Common Failure Modes

Failure modeMechanismTypical mitigation
Electrode driftSignal features change over timeAdaptive recalibration, domain adaptation
Session shiftDistribution changes across daysTransfer learning, invariant features
Movement artifactsMuscle and motion contaminationFiltering, artifact rejection, multimodal fusion
Label mismatchBehavioral labels are noisy or delayedBetter synchronization and latent-state modeling
