How Computers Work with Information

Manual: General · Subject: Artificial Intelligence

Explain data, bits, and why computers need structured information to do AI.

From Information to Computation

Bits and bytes

Computers store information using bits, which are tiny units that can be 00 or 11. Groups of bits form bytes and larger data types such as text, images, audio, and numbers.

Why AI needs data

AI systems learn patterns from examples, so they need data in a form the computer can process. For example, a photo becomes numbers, and a sentence becomes encoded symbols or vectors.

💡

Think of it this way

A computer does not see a cat the way a human does. It sees numbers representing color, shape, and location patterns.

Common data types in AI

Data typeExample
NumbersTemperature readings
TextA customer review
ImagesA photo of a dog
AudioA spoken sentence
