Manufacturing and Prototyping

Manual: General · Subject: Engineering Fundamentals

Learn how engineers turn ideas into physical products using prototypes and production methods.

From idea to object

What manufacturing means

Manufacturing is the process of making products at scale. Engineers think about how to cut, shape, join, assemble, inspect, and package parts efficiently and safely.

Prototyping

A prototype helps engineers test an idea before full production. It may be rough, inexpensive, and made from different materials than the final product.

⚠️

Prototype vs. product

A prototype is for learning. A product is for reliable use by customers. The two often have different design goals.

Manufacturing methods

MethodSimple description
CastingPouring material into a mold
MachiningRemoving material to shape a part
MoldingShaping material in a mold
3D printingBuilding a part layer by layer
AssemblyPutting parts together
