Foundations of Electronic Materials and Device Physics

Manual: General · Subject: Electronics

Build the physical and mathematical basis for understanding charge transport, junctions, and semiconductor devices.

Course Orientation and Scope

Why device physics matters

Electronics at the PhD level begins with the connection between microscopic transport and macroscopic circuit behavior. We will treat carriers as quantum particles in solids, derive current-voltage relations from statistical mechanics, and connect band structure to the performance limits of devices such as diodes, MOSFETs, and heterostructure transistors.

🔑

Core Theme

The central question in device physics is how material properties, geometry, and electrostatics conspire to shape II-VV characteristics, noise, speed, and energy efficiency.

Semiconductor Statistics and Transport

Carrier populations and mobility

In thermal equilibrium, electron and hole densities follow Fermi-Dirac statistics. For non-degenerate semiconductors, the approximations n≈NCe−(EC−EF)/kBTn \approx N_C e^{-(E_C-E_F)/k_B T} and p≈NVe−(EF−EV)/kBTp \approx N_V e^{-(E_F-E_V)/k_B T} are often sufficient. Transport combines drift and diffusion, giving Jn=qnμnE+qDn∇nJ_n = q n \mu_n E + q D_n \nabla n and Jp=qpμpE−qDp∇pJ_p = q p \mu_p E - q D_p \nabla p with the Einstein relation D/μ=kBT/qD/\mu = k_B T/q.

Junctions, Poisson's Equation, and Depletion Approximation

Electrostatics in p-n junctions

The built-in potential and depletion width arise from the balance of charge density and electrostatic potential through Poisson's equation, ∇2ϕ=−ρ/ϵ\nabla^2 \phi = -\rho/\epsilon. Under the depletion approximation, mobile carriers are neglected in the space-charge region, enabling closed-form expressions for barrier height, capacitance, and breakdown scaling.

💡

Research insight

Many modern devices deviate from ideal depletion assumptions because of high doping, quantum confinement, interface states, and electrostatic coupling across nanometer-scale stacks.

Under the depletion approximation, the space-charge region of a p-n junction is assumed to contain mainly:
