Circuit Diagrams and Basic Symbols

Manual: General · Subject: Electronics

Teach how to read the visual language of electronics so circuits become understandable on paper.

Reading circuit drawings

Why diagrams matter

Circuit diagrams use standardized symbols so people can discuss and build circuits without drawing every object exactly as it looks.

Common symbols

Wire
A line connecting components
Battery
A source of voltage
Resistor
A component that limits current
Switch
A device that opens or closes a circuit
LED
A light-emitting diode

Series connections

In a series circuit, components are connected along one path, so the same current passes through each component.

Parallel connections

In a parallel circuit, branches provide multiple paths for current, so each branch can behave differently.

💡

Reading tip

Trace the path from the power source through each component and back again. If there is a break, the circuit is open.

What does a switch do in a circuit?

In a series circuit, does current have one path or many paths?

Series vs parallel

Series

  • One path for current
  • Same current through each component

Parallel

  • Multiple paths for current
  • Branches can work independently
