Networking Fundamentals for Hackers

Manual: General · Subject: Cybersecurity

Explore IP addressing, routing, ports, protocols, and how traffic moves across networks.

How Traffic Travels

IP and Routing

An IP address identifies a device on a network, while routers forward packets between networks. Routing decides where packets should go next.

Ports and Protocols

Ports identify services on a device. For example, web traffic often uses HTTP on port 8080 and HTTPS on port 443443.

Network Vocabulary

Packet
A small chunk of data sent across a network.
Latency
The delay before data arrives.
Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transferred in a time period.
Protocol
The communication rules used by devices.
TCP
A reliable transport protocol.
UDP
A faster, less strict transport protocol.

TCP vs UDP

TCP

  • Reliable delivery
  • Order matters
  • Used where accuracy is important

UDP

  • Lower overhead
  • Can be faster
  • Used where speed matters more than reliability

Reading a Connection Flow

  1. 1

Step 1: Identify the source device.

  2. 2

Step 2: Identify the destination device or service.

  3. 3

Step 3: Determine the route through routers.

  4. 4

Step 4: Check which port and protocol are used.
