Density Functional Theory and the Challenge of Exchange-Correlation

Manual: General · Subject: Chemistry

Study DFT, functional approximations, and the theory of errors that shape modern computational chemistry.

DFT as a practical quantum theory

Hohenberg-Kohn foundations

Density functional theory rests on the fact that the ground-state density uniquely determines the external potential and all observables in principle. Kohn-Sham DFT replaces the interacting problem with a noninteracting reference system whose orbitals reproduce the exact density, leaving the exchange-correlation functional as the central unknown.

⚠️

Important limitation

No universal approximate functional is exact across all bonding motifs, oxidation states, spin states, and noncovalent interactions.

Common approximation families

Local density, generalized gradient, meta-GGA, hybrid, range-separated hybrid, and double-hybrid functionals each encode different compromises among cost, self-interaction error, delocalization error, and nonlocal correlation. In practice, functional choice is a model-selection problem rather than a purely theoretical one.

What is the hardest part of Kohn-Sham DFT in practice?

What problem is self-interaction error often associated with?

Practical DFT error sources

Error sourceConsequenceTypical symptom
Self-interaction errorOver-delocalizationIncorrect charge transfer
Dispersion deficiencyWeak intermolecular bindingUnderestimated stacking energies
Derivative discontinuityPoor gapsWrong ionization and excitation trends
Spin contamination in approximate settingsIncorrect spin energeticsUnstable open-shell predictions

Frontier methodological themes

Modern developments include machine-learned functionals, orbital-free DFT, ensemble DFT for excited states, and density-corrected workflows. A major open problem is achieving simultaneously correct reaction barriers, noncovalent interactions, and transition-metal energetics with a robust error model.

Which family is most often associated with adding nonlocal dispersion correction at low cost?
